China Power Battery Recycling Market Outlook Survey

The ideal mode for recycling and recycling of power batteries is to use and reuse the first step, but the current disposal method of power batteries is still mainly based on dismantling and recycling.  According to GGII statistics, in 2017, a total of 83,000 tons of lithium batteries (including digital lithium batteries) were used and dismantled, and the battery dismantling accounted for 95%.  The reasons for the small use of the ladder include: 1. The battery manufacturer is not willing to bear the battery safety risk, and does not want the scrapped battery to flow into the market again; 2. In the past, the power battery was less scrapped, and the old battery matching was more difficult; 3. The current power battery ladder The use of technology is still immature and requires continuous technical accumulation. 4. The energy storage market and the reuse market space have not been released on a large scale.


In recent years, relevant state departments have issued a number of policy documents and guidance on the recycling and reuse of lithium batteries.  On February 26, 2018, the "Interim Measures for the Management of Recycling and Utilization of New Energy Vehicles' Power Battery" was released, clarifying that automobile production enterprises should establish power battery recycling channels, and be responsible for recycling used and used batteries after the use of new energy vehicles, and power batteries. Companies need to provide support in battery design, production and recycling.


However, the current recycling mechanism still needs to be improved, the battery recycling channel is not smooth, the public's environmental awareness is relatively weak, and random discarding is serious.  GGII believes that with the introduction of the corresponding implementation rules and strict supervision by the competent authorities, the waste power battery industry will gradually be standardized, the business model will gradually mature, and the economy will be reflected.


In comparison, digital batteries have higher cobalt content, greater economic value of recycling, and a larger market size, which has now entered a relatively mature stage.  The amount of scrapped material is relatively large each year, and a relatively stable recycling business model has been formed. However, the total recycling amount is only about 40% of the scrapped amount. There are still a large number of scrapped batteries that have not entered the recycling system.
